Starting the New Year with a hike is is one of the best ways I can think of to set the right tone for the months ahead. And a loop hike like the Bluff Springs-Dutchman trails offers the perfect way to spend a beautiful, clear, cool, sunny day in the Superstition Wilderness. Starting from Peralta trailhead, it's about nine miles around the loop, and it takes you through some amazing scenery. Rock formations filled with all sorts of creatures and characters tower above you; 100-year old saguaro cactus stand sentry along the way; gently flowing streams flow over beautifully carved slickrock; distant views draw your attention deep in to the wilderness, enticing you to explore further next time; long shadows of the late afternoon stretch across the hillsides and valley floor; late afternoon light paints warm colors on the rock faces and backlights beautifully a variety of plants and flowers; and the day finally gives way to the flowing colors of sunset and its afterglow. There's time for lunch by the stream and sitting on the warm rocks at mid-day. And there are plenty of memories to take home and relish all through the new year!
