Established in 1892, Yellowstone National Park was the world’s first national park, protecting an intact ecosystem of 2.2 million acres (3,500 sq miles) that contain half of the world’s active geysers. and it inspired the establishment of countless other national parks around the world. Situated mostly in Wyoming, the park also spreads into parts of Montana (to the north) and Idaho (to the west). In addition to the unique hypothermal wonders, including the well-known Old Faithful, there are deep canyons, large lakes, rushing rivers, dramatic waterfalls, and lush forests. Numerous animal species find a home in the park, including Grizzly and Black bears, bison, wolves, and elk.
The land in Yellowstone National Park has been homeland and hunting grounds for Indigenous Peoples for at least 11,000 years. When the park was established, native people were viewed as a threat to tourism, and they were forcibly removed, and through false narratives their history was erased. Today there is an attempt by both the National Park Service and organizations such as Yellowstone Forever, that are working to re-establish native connections to the park.
We had the opportunity to visit Yellowstone National Park in October 2025, just after our trip to the Grand Tetons National Park. I hope to add later more details about our visit and the places we walked, but in the meantime I wanted to have the photos available for viewing. You will find in this gallery images from West Thumb Geyser Basin, Norris Basin Thermal area, Yellowstone River Canyon (Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone), Roaring Mountain, Swan Lake Flats (Gallatin Range), Mammoth Hot Springs, Gibbon Falls, Prismatic Spring (Midway Geyser Basin ), and Old Faithful (Upper Geyser Basin). We had several inches of snow on our second day in the park, which limited travel but which provided a magical backdrop to the thermal areas and to the river canyon.
Visiting Yellowstone National Park was a marvelous trip from which we hold many fond memories. We hope you will enjoy the images of features that caught my camera’s eye.
