Photos in this gallery are from our trip in July 2019 to Banff National Park. We stayed near Lake Louise, hiking the trails around Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. In the middle of our stay we hiked to Shadow Lake Lodge, where we stayed for 3 nights, and on the last day of our trip we hiked the trail to Helen Lake Trail. This was our first trip to Banff National Park, a place that for many years we have wanted to explore. We learned that it is not a place you visit just once, so I'm sure we will be back.
For the first few days of our stay a rainy system settled in, but our friend Catrina at Paradise Lodge advised us to just continue with our hiking plans, because the weather was always unpredictable and might clear up at any time. So we slipped on our GoreTex rain gear and headed out in the rain. With the grand views that Banff is known for nowhere in sight, we had reason to focus our eyes and our attention on the smaller beauty that surrounded us. Although at times we were enveloped within the clouds and fog, with limited visibility, the weather was constantly changing, and occasionally a brief opening provided a marvelous view of a mountain peak, a cliff, or perhaps even a majestic view of our surroundings. I feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to hike in these conditions, even though I probably missed some of the larger grandeur for which Banff National Park is renowned.
The storm system broke just before our hike to Shadow Lake, although we continued to have a mix of sun and cloud, with showers at various times during the day. But when the skies cleared, the scenery was stunning. In the vast majority of these images, the clouds played a prominent role in giving the scene both definition and color, as well as a sense of movement.
It was truly inspiring to be in the midst of this great natural beauty and to be able to bring so many precious images home with me, both those that were impressed on my mind and those that were captured by the camera. I hope you enjoy the latter in these galleries, and if we have a chance to meet in person, I'll be happy to share stories and impressions of the really special landscape we walked within.
