In early November 2005, after the end of a fruitful semester at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, we crossed the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. We hired a car in Christchurch and over the next six weeks we explored the South Island, driving north along the east coast through Kaikoura to Picton and Nelson, then along the west coast and over the Haast Pass through Wanaka and Queenstown to Te Anau, then up to Mt. Cook and finally Authur’s Pass before flying home from Christchurch. Along the way, we took numerous day hikes and four multi-day hut-to-hut tramps. It was a wonderful journey, taking us from late spring into early summer.

The photos in this gallery are from Akaroa (on Banks Peninsular), Kaikoura, Whites Bay, Abel Tasman Coast Track, Paparoa National Park, Okarito, Franz Josef Glacier, Haast Pass (several waterfalls), Wanaka, Te Anau, Kepler Track, Milford Sound, Hump Ridge Track, Doubtful Sound, Mt. Cook, and Arthur’s Pass. I hope you enjoy them!
