Scotland presents a landscape filled with both stunning natural beauty and fascinating historical sites. Lochs, glens, hills, rivers, mountains, ridges, and coastal cliffs and bluffs provide a landscape that is home to medieval castles and fortresses, centuries-old churches, harbour villages, and ancient tombs. Your mind is challenged by a long and complex history of settlement, battles, and inventions, while all your senses are surrounded with fresh air, open sky, and clear waters.
We had the good fortune to spend ten days traveling from Edinburgh to Loch Tay, the Isle of Skye and the Orkneys, staying with wonderful hosts in some very special B & Bs. We encountered rain, wind, and sun along the way, each giving its own flavor to our mountain and coastal walks. I have ancestral roots in Scotland (along with England, Ireland, and probably other northern European lands), and I experienced a special affinity for the land and the people. We left plenty of places to explore on future visits, so I’m sure we’ll be back again in the near future.
In these galleries I’ve included the photos that I liked the most as I made my initial passes through the full set. Although the set is quite large, I’ve left them all in the gallery for the time being, so that friends and family can see the whole of our trip. Hopefully soon I’ll create a reduced-size gallery to showcase the best of the photos. So if you like particular images, just let me know, and I’ll be sure to include them in the final set.
